Fox Extreme Weather Center: Harvey Tracking
A family of six who try to escape the Harvey flood was counted among 14 victims killed in the historic storm, officials said.
The four children and their great-grandparents probably died on Sunday afternoon as they tried to escape the floodwaters in a van, officials said.
The van sank after being carried away by the waters of the swamp of the Greens. The driver, the great uncle of the children, succeeded in escaping. He told everyone to get out of the truck using the back door, but the truck collapsed quickly, KHOU said.
Witnesses said the first responders were in the area, but they were too late for a rescue operation, according to FOX26.
Virginia Saldivar, whose brother-in-law drove the vehicle and managed to escape before being caught by a strong current, said: “I only hope to find the bodies.”
The bodies were not recovered on Monday night, but Harris County sheriff’s agents said that “the 14 deaths reported included a family of six lost when their truck sank after crossing a bridge and hit the water “.
The victims are Saldivar, 84, his wife Belia, 81, Daisy Saldivar, 6, Xavier Saldivar, 8, Dominic Saldivar, 14, Devy Saldivar, 16.
“The heart of Pasadena ISD is heavy because we learned that four students from Pasadena ISD and two of their great-grandparents were swept by the floods of Greens Bayou while they were trying to escape the floods of Harvey” , Said Pasadena Independent School District.
